Remember those lazy afternoons when you’re searching for a fun, engaging activity to do with your kids? Creating this popsicle stick butterfly is the perfect solution.
From the first snip of the scissors to the final stroke of color, I found myself immersed in a world of creativity I hadn’t expected.
What started as a simple craft became a meditation on patience and precision.
The transformation of ordinary sticks into delicate wings was nothing short of magical.
But the real beauty? It’s in the imperfections, the unique patterns each person brings to their creation.
Ready to spread your own wings? Grab some popsicle sticks and let your imagination take flight
Step 1: Things You’ll Need For Popsicle Stick Butterfly
- Popsicle Sticks: I have used 14 popsicle sticks to make the structure of the butterfly. 12 sticks for the wings and 2 for its body.
- Scissor or Cutter: To cut the popsicle sticks you can either use a scissor or a suitable cutting tool.
- Markers or Paint: To shade the popsicle sticks you can use colorful markers or watercolor. However, you can use both as per your preferences.
- Multipurpose Glue or Glue Gun: To complete the craft activity in less time you can use a glue gun to fix the popsicle sticks together. If you don’t have access to a glue gun then a multipurpose glue will do the trick.
Step 2: Shaping the Popsicle Sticks
Now that all the key materials are handy, it’s time to align the popsicle sticks and mark the required trimming edges.
First, I placed a popsicle stick for the body and then aligned three sticks as the top right wing.
To shape them like a wing, I needed to trim the three popsicle sticks at the joining ends.
Note: If kids were involved in the project, they will need adult supervision or assistance for this step. I used scissors to trim the edges since the popsicle sticks I had were not strong enough. Each wing requires three popsicle sticks, so I trimmed at least twelve sticks to make four wings. In image 2.2 above, I have trimmed the twelve popsicle sticks and aligned them around the single stick.
Step 3: Aligning the Sticks
The next step is to align and glue the sticks over the single popsicle stick.
I first aligned them properly to ensure the figure was even, then secured them with glue.
I used multipurpose glue instead of a hot glue gun because a couple of kids were involved in the project.
I started by applying glue to the base popsicle stick and then aligned the twelve sticks (six on each side) as seen in the images above.
Next, I applied glue to the joining edges of the sticks and placed another popsicle stick in the middle.
Once the sticks were properly aligned, I left them to dry.
I made sure to leave the project under a running fan (You can also place it in direct sunlight to speed up the drying process).
In my case, I asked the children to take a break until it dried.
Step 4: Shading With Unique Patterns
It took about an hour for the glue to dry and the sticks were securely attached.
Next came the shading, so I grabbed colorful pens to draw different patterns.
I shaded the butterfly on both the front and reverse sides with various designs.
The shades I used can be seen in the next step, which includes the final structure of the popsicle stick butterfly craft.
Step 5: Adding The Final Touch To The Structure
The patterns crafted on each stick worked wonderfully to enhance the butterfly structure. In the end, it looked absolutely stunning and irresistibly charming.

Final Thoughts
I’d recommend this project for family bonding, stress relief, or even team-building exercises.
The beauty lies in its simplicity and adaptability, you can scale the complexity based on skill level or available time.
For educators, this craft offers a hands-on way to teach symmetry, color theory, and even basic engineering concepts.
I would say don’t aim for perfection just enjoy the quirks in your design, they make each butterfly unique.
Lastly, consider experimenting with different materials or adding embellishments to make it your own.
