Dancing Paper Caterpillar Craft for kids (With Template)

Crafting has always been close to my heart, and today I’m excited to share a project that’s both simple and delightful: a dancing paper caterpillar craft.

This charming little creature comes to life with just a shake of your hand, bringing instant smiles to faces young and old.

What I love most about this craft is its accessibility.

In just 10 minutes, I transformed colorful paper cutouts into a wiggling, jiggling caterpillar that dances with the slightest movement.

It’s perfect for crafters of all skill levels, from beginners to experts.

I’ve prepared a step-by-step guide, complete with a downloadable template, to make this project as easy and enjoyable as possible.

Let’s take a quick look at the list of items required for crafting this caterpillar.

Step 1: Things You’ll Need For Dancing Paper Caterpillar Craft

Colorful Papers: Use colorful craft papers to cut the unique shapes of the dancing caterpillar and customize it to your liking.
Glue: To stick the shapes such as the facial details, lower body, hand, legs, and the antennas you will need glue.
Caterpillar Template: To avoid the hassle of crafting the shapes of the caterpillar’s structure manually I have designed a colorful template for you. This unique template can be downloaded and printed from step #2.

Estimated Completion Time: With the help of the colorful template from our website, it took me only 10 minutes to craft the dancing caterpillar.

As shown in the image above, this is the dancing caterpillar template design.

You can use my pre-colored shapes to cut and assemble the structure, or refer to the shapes and cut them from different colored papers to customize your caterpillar.

Click here to download the ready template, which you can print on regular A4 paper.

Feel free to print unlimited copies if you have multiple kids or colleagues participating.

Step 3: Cutting The Caterpillar Shapes

You have two options:

Download and print the colorful template to cut the shapes
Or create similar shapes using your choice of colorful craft paper sheets.

In other words, you have the freedom to customize the paper caterpillar to your liking.

I printed the ready template on A4 paper and precisely cut the shapes using a standard craft scissor, as shown in image 3.2 above.

Step 4: Assembling the Caterpillar Shapes

With the caterpillar template shapes ready, I proceeded with the assembly process.

So, I grabbed the glue to stick the shapes together, starting with the facial structure.

First, I aligned and attached the facial details i.e. eyes, nose, mouth, and antennas to the caterpillar’s face.

Next, I began sticking the eyes in such a way that they slightly popped out from the facial shape, as seen in image 4.1 above.

Then, I added the red cutout for the mouth, followed by the yellow cutout for the nose, positioning it on the stretched portion of the face, as shown in image 4.2 above.

Finally, I glued the antennas above the caterpillar’s head, slightly behind its eyes. This completed the facial structure of the dancing paper caterpillar.

Step 5: Assembling the Lower Body Shapes

With the upper portion ready, it was time to assemble the colorful shapes of the caterpillar’s lower body.

To ensure an even structure, I carefully followed the correct alignments while assembling the body.

I started by placing the yellow semicircular shape at the top, followed by the first blue cutout.

There are two blue shapes, the one with the distinct tail-end shape is easy to identify.

Next, I attached the single green cutout below the blue shape, then added the orange shape, followed by the remaining yellow and blue shapes, as seen in image 5.2 above.

Step 6: Fixing the Hands and Legs

To make the caterpillar look like it’s dancing, I carefully attached the shapes for its hands and legs.

These shapes are designed so that, when properly assembled, the caterpillar appears to be captured mid-dance.

I started by aligning and attaching the upper hands and lower legs. For the six tiny hand shapes, I ensured they were properly aligned before sticking them on one by one.

As shown in the image above, this is the final structure of the dancing caterpillar. Just grab it and shake it from side to side to make it look like it’s really dancing.
