Get ready for a journey into the world of insects with our leaf shaped paper grasshopper craft for kids.
This insect craft is not only fun but also educational, teaching your little ones about the fascinating world of grasshoppers.
Using simple materials and my easy-to-follow guide, we’ll transform ordinary paper into an extraordinary hopping friend.
So, grab your scissors and glue, and let’s dive into this green adventure that’ll make your kids jump for joy.
Editor’s note: I have also crafted another version of paper grasshopper craft that is also as simple as this project, check it out here.
Step 1: Things You’ll Need For This Leaf Shaped Paper Grasshopper Craft
- Grasshopper Template: To assemble the structure of the grasshopper you will need a template with the required shapes of its body Structures. I have designed a unique template for you which can be found in the below step.
- Scissor: You will need a standard scissor to cut the shapes from the template for Assembling purposes.
- Glue: To stick or assemble the shapes together you can use a standard craft glue or a multipurpose adhesive will do the trick.
Step 2: Downloading The Paper Leaf Grasshopper Template Source
To make your craft time easier, I’ve designed a template with all the shapes needed to create a Grasshopper structure.
You can download and print the free template from our website on standard A4 paper or adjust the size to your preference.
For an extra touch of uniqueness, you can use a real leaf like the one you see in the image above.
Just be sure to pick a leaf that’s already fallen to the ground rather than plucking one from a tree.
If searching for a leaf is not your thing, go ahead with the shapes in the template.
Step 3: Cutting the Template Shapes
With the craft materials and template ready, I began the activity.
I couldn’t find a long leaf lying around any tree in my compound, so I used the paper leaf design from the template.
I cut out all the shapes from the template as shown in image 3.2 above (The shape of the leaf turned out to look surprisingly real).
Step 4: Assembling The Grasshopper’s Facial Structure
With the template shapes prepared, I started piecing them together to create the grasshopper structure.
First, I assembled the grasshopper’s facial structure by sticking the eye and antenna shapes onto the green oval cutout.
Next, I drew the mouth line using a dark green marker, as shown in image 4.2 above.
This completed the facial structure of the paper leaf grasshopper.
Now, it was time to assemble its lower body in the next step.
Step 5: Fixing the Legs to the paper leaf
I aligned the shape of the leaf slightly slanting to the left.
Then, I positioned and attached the leg shapes to the back of the leaf.
I carefully applied glue to the joining edges of the shapes before sticking them together. This completed the lower body structure of the paper leaf grasshopper craft.
Step 6: Assemble the Head, Body, and Hands
We have now reached the final step of the paper leaf grasshopper craft i.e. assembling the head, lower body, and hands.
First, I attached the head structure to the lower body, as shown in image 6.1 above.
Then, I aligned and stuck the hand shapes beneath the head and onto the lower body structure.

Note: It took only 8 minutes for me to complete the paper leaf grasshopper structure using the ready template from our website.
Final Thoughts
This craft is more than just a fun activity, it’s a gateway to nurturing creativity, fine motor skills, and environmental awareness in children.
I highly recommend incorporating real leaves when possible, as it adds a tactile dimension and encourages kids to observe nature closely.
For future projects, consider exploring other insects or even creating a whole paper ecosystem.
Remember, the beauty of crafting lies not just in the end product, but in the journey of creation.
So, don’t fret if your grasshopper looks unique, that’s what makes it special.
