Memorial Day Decor Craft using Bamboo Sticks and Crepe Paper

As I unfurled the vibrant crepe paper, memories of childhood crafts flooded back.

But this wasn’t just any project, it was a tribute to heroes, a burst of red, white, and blue ready to transform my space for Memorial Day.

With bamboo sticks in hand and a heart full of gratitude, in just 10-minutes I managed to create a decoration that would honor the fallen and brighten my home.

Little did I know that this simple craft would not only adorn my walls but also spark conversations about sacrifice and remembrance.

Before we begin, let’s take a quick look at the list of basic craft supplies you’ll need to make this Memorial Day decor.

Step 1: Things You’ll Need For Crepe Paper Memorial Day Decor Craft

Step 1 - Things You'll Need For Crepe Paper Memorial Day Decor Craft
  • Bamboo Sticks: I have used bamboo sticks to wrap the strips of crepe papers around them (You can use similar sticks instead of bamboo sticks).
  • Crepe Paper: You’ll need colorful crepe paper strips such as blue, red, and white to match the memorial day’s theme.
  • Scissor: You will need a scissor to cut the crepe papers.
  • Glue: To stick the crepe paper strips to the bamboo sticks you’ll need glue.

Estimated Time taken to make the Memorial Day Special Decor Craft: It took 10 minutes for me to craft the memorial day decor piece.

Step 2: Cutting the Crepe Paper

I used red, blue, and white strips from a crepe paper decoration roll.

If you don’t have crepe rolls, you can easily cut long strips from sheets of crepe paper instead.

Alternatively, colorful craft paper works just as well for cutting strips.

Once I had my strips ready, I made cuts from one side of each strip, just as shown in the images 2.1 and 2.2 above.

Step 3: Wrap the Bamboo Sticks

Step 3 - Wrap the Bamboo Sticks

I have cut the bamboo sticks in half, but you can trim them to your preferred length.

Next, I grabbed a bamboo stick and wrapped one of the strips around it.

Make sure to apply some glue to the bamboo stick before wrapping the crepe paper around it.

I also ensured that the entire stick was covered evenly with the crepe paper, as seen in image 3.2 above.

Step 4: Prepare Your Set

Step 4 - Prepare Your Set

Similar to step 3, I wrapped the remaining bamboo sticks using blue and white crepe paper strips.

I prepared two red sticks, two white sticks, and one stick wrapped in blue.

You can create your own combination to customize the structure as you like.

Step 5: Make a Hard Paper Ring

Step 5 - Make a Hard Paper Ring

I cut a strip from a piece of sturdy paper to prepare a small ring.

To shape the ring, I carefully rolled the strip using my fingers until it formed a circular shape.

Next, I applied glue to the joining edges of the paper strip and pressed them together, allowing the glue to dry and secure the ring evenly.

Once the ring was dry and stable, I arranged the bamboo sticks around it in my desired pattern as seen in image 5.2 above.

I then applied glue to the ends of each stick and carefully attached them to the ring, ensuring they were evenly spaced and securely fixed in place.

Step 6: Glittering Red Star

Step 6 - Glittering Red Star

I stuck the sticks around the ring and waited patiently for the glue to dry.

It’s a bit like watching paint dry, but with a sense of accomplishment at the end LOL!

Next, I grabbed a piece of self-adhesive red glitter sheet and cut out a star shape.

Who doesn’t love a bit of sparkle, right? I then stuck the glittery star over the ring, just as you see in image 6 above.

To take the decoration up a notch, you can add some decorative ornaments to the bottom edges of each bamboo stick.

It’s like giving your craft a little bling, because even bamboo sticks deserve to feel fabulous.

You can create multiple structures and display them throughout your living space.

Additionally, this specific design can double as a charming Christmas tree ornament, adding a festive touch to your holiday decor.

Final Thoughts

While the above craft idea is fairly straightforward and can be done by anyone I believe there’s room for expansion and creativity which you should try.

For instance, incorporating LED lights within the structure could create a stunning nighttime display.

You can also consider using eco-friendly materials like recycled paper or biodegradable glitter to make this craft more sustainable.

I’d recommend exploring ways to make this project more interactive, perhaps by adding small tags where family members can write messages of gratitude or remembrance.

This could turn the craft into a meaningful family activity, fostering discussions about the significance of Memorial Day.
