Today, we’re diving into the whimsical world of origami, but not just any origami, it’s the “Origami Jumping Frog!” Get ready to fold, leap, and laugh your way through this fantastic craft adventure.
I promise, even if you’ve never folded a piece of paper in your life, you’ll be hopping with joy by the end of this.
Now, don’t worry if you’re not an origami expert, I’ve got your back.
We’ll be turning a simple piece of paper into a hopping frog that’s ready to take on any lily pad. It’s so easy, even a frog could do it – well, almost, LOL!
Let’s take a quick look into the list of things you will require to create a jumping frog.
Things Required For Origami Jumping Frog
- Crafting Card Papers: I have used Green, yellow, white, black, and fluorescent green shaded card papers for this particular DIY craft project.
- Scale Ruler: To mark straight lines and for some measurements you will need a ruler.
- Full circle Protractor: A full circle protractor contains circles of different sizes that will be needed in the making of the frog.
- Curling Ribbon: I will use the red curling ribbon to craft the Frog’s tongue.
- Pencil: You can use a pencil to mark or draw the required elements.
- Scissor: Use your regular crafting scissor for cutting the required elements.
- Glue: Glue is needed to stick the papers.
If you’ve got everything you need, let’s dive right into our DIY craft project!
Step 1: Draw leaf and shading lines
I’ve chosen fluorescent card paper for the leaf shape, which I’ll use as the base for our frog.
Now, grab a ruler and pencil to draw lines for cutting into thin, long strips (as seen in image 1.2).
Next, cut the strips as seen in image 1.3 above.
Step 2: Start pasting them over the leaf
Apply glue to each strip and carefully stick them evenly onto the leaf, this will give it a neat and tidy appearance.
Step 3: Trim the Edges
I’ve neatly trimmed the edges of the strips using scissors, giving the leaf a polished finish. This will ensure that our frog looks tidy when placed on top.
Step 4: Draw and cut the figures
First, I sketched the frog shape on plain white paper and carefully cut it out with scissors.
Then, I traced the outline onto the yellow paper using a pencil to get the exact shape and cut it accordingly.
For the eyes and green spots, I used a protractor.
In the end, I had all the shapes I needed to create our froggy craft.
Step 5: Give Personality To Your Hopping Frog
For eyes, I first pasted a green circle cutout followed by black and white circles one above the other.
Make sure the circle cuts are larger than the ones stuck above them.
The idea of using multiple circles is to ensure the eyes should appear as if they are popping out similar to their real appearance.
Next, you should start applying glue to its body randomly and stick the green circles.
Step 6: The Loopy Tongue
I’ve chosen plastic curling ribbons, perfect for DIY crafts. Using ribbons made of other materials won’t give the same effect.
To curl the tongue edges of a frog, simply roll them with your fingers or use a pencil to wrap the ribbon around.
The curled edges are ready to be attached to the frog.
Step 7: Fix the Tongue
I applied glue to the opposite end of the ribbon and attached it below the frog’s mouth.
Let the other end of the tongue remain free and curled.
Step 8: Craft two strips for the hopper
To create the hopping element, I cut two equally-sized thin strips from the fluorescent card paper.
You can achieve this by folding the paper along one edge and cutting to detach it from the sheet.
Then, cut the strip in half, just like in the image above.
Step 9: Craft the hopper
Now that the strips are ready, let’s roll them together correctly.
Align the two strips to create an ‘L’ shape and securely stick the joining points together.
Begin rolling them one by one to form the hopper.
You can refer to the image above for your reference.
Step 10: Fix the Hopper
I’ve added glue to one end of the hopper and attached it beneath the frog’s structure.
During this step, ensure that the hopper adheres firmly to the frog.
If needed, give it some time to securely bond and dry.
Step 11: Fix the Spider to its base
Now, let’s place the frog onto the leaf base you created earlier.
Apply glue to the other end of the hopper and carefully attach it to the leaf base.
Allow it to dry before you give your frog a gentle nudge to watch it hop and enjoy the effect!
