Remember those carefree childhood days when we’d chase pigeons in the park? Now, here I was, crafting one from paper.
It’s amazing how a simple craft can transport you back in time.
In just 8 minutes, I created a cute paper pigeon that’s both charming and educational.
Here’s why you’ll love this craft:
- Suits Almost Everyone: Perfect for busy parents, impatient crafters, and those with short attention spans
- Potential Educational Goldmine: Sneaky way to teach kids about bird anatomy
- No fancy supplies needed, just the pigeon template should suffice
- Downloadable pigeon template means less paper waste
Let’s take a quick look at the list of minimum craft supplies you’ll need to make this paper Pigeon craft.
Step 1: Things You’ll Need For Paper Pigeon Craft
- Craft Papers: You’ll need craft papers to cut the shapes of the Pigeon’s body parts. Make sure to use the right color combinations or something closer resembling the shades of a real Pigeon. I have used bluish gray and a slightly dark shade for the main body (Rest you can customize them as per your preferences).
- Scissors: You will need a scissor to cut the shapes or from the template or from colorful craft papers.
- Glue: You have the option to use a glue stick, multipurpose glue, or standard craft glue to easily stick the paper pigeon shapes together.
- Pigeon Template: I have uploaded the paper Pigeon template that includes the shapes of its body parts (Can be found in step 2 below).
Estimated time to complete: It took me only about 8 minutes to make the paper pigeon craft using the template from the website.
Step 2: Preparing The Paper Pigeon Template
You can download and print the paper pigeon template by clicking here.
This ready-made template eliminates the need for colorful papers, helping to reduce waste.
If you’d like, you can also use the template as a reference or for tackling more challenging shapes.
It’s especially handy when you don’t have specific colored papers on hand.
Step 3: Cutting the Pigeon Shapes
Let’s cut the pigeon parts from colorful craft papers using scissors.
You’ll need to cut out the head, lower body, legs, wings, eyes, and beak (Take your time, especially when cutting tiny shapes).
For the eyes, you can either cut out the shape from the template or use wiggly eyes if you have them.
Step 4: Assembling the Shapes
Once the shapes were prepared, I set the scissors aside and picked up the glue. Using it, I carefully stuck the shapes together to create the paper pigeon craft.
I started by aligning and sticking the paper pigeons head to the lower body.
Once they were attached, I moved on to assembling the pigeons’ facial details.
Honestly, I messed up cutting the eye shapes from the template, which happens sometimes.
So, I used a paper punch to make tiny circles instead and stuck them on carefully.
Then, I aligned and stuck the pigeons beak in place.
After the eyes and beak were firmly attached, I used a marker to draw black pupils in the eyes and add a small shade on the beak.
Step 5: Fixing the Wings and Legs
We have moved to the final step of the paper Pigeon Craft which is to assemble the wings and the legs.
To attach the pigeons wings, I first aligned them properly.
I fixed the dark cutout first, then added the oval shape followed by sticking the small shape around the feather tail and placed the oval shape slightly to the right.
Next, I aligned the leg shapes properly and glued them to the back of the main pigeon structure.
If the shapes have very little room for the glue, then for a firm support, you can use a clear tape to secure them from the back.
Final Thoughts
This Paper pigeon craft is a fantastic way to introduce children to paper crafts while teaching them about bird anatomy.
However, I’d recommend expanding this activity to include educational elements.
For instance, incorporate a lesson on pigeon habitats, behaviors, or their role in urban ecosystems.
To make it more challenging for older kids or adults, consider adding textures or 3D elements to the pigeon.
You could use feathers, fabric scraps, or even recycled materials to enhance realism and promote sustainability.
Remember, crafts go beyond the final result, they encourage learning and creativity throughout the process.
