So grab your scissors, glue, and get ready to craft an irresistible new feline friend. This delightful kids craft is about to become your go-to boredom buster.
Editor’s Note: I have also crafted a non paper plate version of kitten craft using a free printable template that involves simply cutting and pasting the shapes (it’s super easy).
Step 1: Things You’ll Need for Paper Plate Cat Craft
- Paper Plate: You will need a paper plate as the main facial structure of the Cat. I used a paper plate which was light red in color and was the only available plate with me. However, you can use a regular white paper plate or simply paint it with the color of your choice.
- Scissor: To cut the shapes of the Cat’s facial details from the template you will need a regular craft scissor.
- Glue: You can use a standard craft glue or a multipurpose glue to stick the Cutouts to the paper plate.
- Cat Template: To assemble the shapes of the Cat’s face to the paper plate you will need the template. To access the cat’s template simply move to the step below.
Step 2: Paper Plate Cat Template
Here’s how the paper plate cat’s template looks (in the image above).
It includes the shapes for the ears, eyes, mustache hair, and mouth (You’ll need these for assembling in the next steps).
You can easily download and print the paper plate cat’s template from our blog.
Feel free to adjust the sizes to fit your paper plate, though the template is designed for standard A4 size.
Step 3: Cutting the Shapes of the Cat figures
Once you have the Cat’s template printed according to your preferred size it’s time to cut the shapes.
I have cut the shapes from the template of the Cat using a standard craft scissor as seen in the image 3.2 above.
Note: You can either cut the mustache shapes or simply draw it using a black marker pen or whichever works best for you.
Step 4: Assembling the Cat Ears
With the basic craft supplies and cutouts ready, it was time to assemble the facial structure of the paper plate cat.
I began by aligning the cat’s ears over the paper plate, as seen in image 4.1 above.
Next, I applied glue to the bottom edges of the ear shapes and stuck them on evenly, following image 4.2 above.
Step 5: Assembling the Cat Eyes and Mouth
It was time to assemble the cat’s eyes and mouth shapes.
The eye shapes looked so real after I aligned and stuck them onto the paper plate.
Next, I aligned and attached the mouth shape, which included the nose and lip lines. The cat already looked as if I had brought it to life.
Step 6: Assembling the Mustache
With this, we’ve moved on to the final step of the paper cat craft i.e. assembling the mustache hairs.
I aligned three shapes to the right and three to the left of the cat’s face, as shown in image 6.1 above.
Then, I stuck them on one by one, completing the paper plate cat craft. The eyes and mustache hairs truly were the standout features of this activity.
Note: It took 8 minutes for me to craft the paper plate Cat’s facial structure using the ready template from the website.
Final Thoughts
This adorable paper plate cat craft is such a fun, easy way to keep little hands busy and engaged.
I highly recommend having all the supplies prepped and ready to go before getting started. The cutting can be a bit tricky for younger kids, so pre cut templates are a huge help.
I also suggest using a thicker paper plate or cardstock base for more durability.
And don’t be afraid to get creative, let kids personalize their cats with different colored plates, googly eyes, pom-pom noses, or even pipe cleaner whiskers.
With the free printable template, this makes an awesome craft for rainy days, classroom projects, or anytime you need a simple boredom buster.
In my case, my kids adored making these feline friends and I’m sure yours will too.
