Step 1: Materials You’ll Need For Popcorn Tub Craft

Step 1 - Materials You'll Need For Popcorn Tub Craft
  • Paper Plate: To make the popcorn tub structure as the base of the craft you will need a paper plate. The size depends on its availability and I have used a medium sized paper plate.
  • Red Paint or Craft Paper: To make red stripes over the Popcorn Tub structure you can either use paint, markers, or a sheet of red craft paper.
  • Off White or Light Yellow Crepe Paper: To make the popcorns you can use white or yellow shaded crepe paper or simply use tissue papers.
  • Scissor: To cut the paper plate and other required elements you can grab a standard scissor.
  • Glue: To stick the elements and paper popcorn shapes together you will need a glue (a liquid glue will do the trick).

Step 2: Preparing the Popcorn Tub

Step 2 - Preparing the Popcorn Tub

Grab a paper plate and scissors to prepare the popcorn tub base for your craft.

Cut the sides of the paper plate to shape it like a popcorn tub, as shown in image 2.2 above.

Note: Set aside the trimmed portions; you might need them later.

Step 3: Shading the Popcorn Tub

Step 3 - Shading the Popcorn Tub

Now it’s time to shade the paper plate like a typical popcorn tub with black and red stripes.

I used red acrylic paint and a paintbrush to create the stripes.

As seen in the image above, I used the trimmed portions of the paper plate to secure my workspace (placing the paint bottle on one piece and using another to protect the edges while painting).

Acrylic paints provide a glossy finish that enhances the look of your craft. However, you can also use watercolors for the red stripes.

Alternatively, cut long strips of red craft paper and stick them onto the paper plate.

After drawing the stripes, set the plate aside to let the paint dry evenly.

Step 4: Preparing the Popcorns

Step 4 - Preparing the Popcorns

While the paint is drying, let’s prepare the crunchy popcorn.

You’ll need a strip of crepe paper, cut into squares or rectangles as shown in the images above.

Crepe paper easily crumbles, making it a perfect fit for this craft. Alternatively, you can use tissue paper cut into small squares.

Gently crumble each piece into small balls, being careful not to apply too much force, so they stay fluffy and resemble popcorn.

Continue crumbling each piece until you have enough to cover the top of the tub.

Step 5: Assembling The Popcorns

Step 5 - Assembling The Popcorns

The paint over the tub has dried evenly and I had the popcorns ready to fill it.

Before aligning and sticking the popcorns, I made a base using fluorescent yellow paper, as seen in image 5.1 above.

This added a yellowish effect to the background where I would stick the popcorns.

The top base was ready, so I spread glue over the yellow paper and began aligning the popcorn pieces one by one.

I made sure to cover the top surface as much as possible and let them stick evenly.

Step 6: Message To Your Pop

Step 6 - Message To Your Pop

The popcorn tub was ready, so added a special message to match the theme.

Since it’s a POP-corn tub, I decided to play on that with a message for my dad.

I wrote “Best Pop” which perfectly fit both the craft and my dad.

Final Thoughts

Consider personalizing the tub with Dad’s favorite movie quotes or snippets of shared memories. This could turn a simple craft into a meaningful keepsake.

I’d recommend exploring eco-friendly alternatives, like using recycled paper plates or biodegradable paints.

This could be an opportunity to discuss sustainability with children while crafting.

This craft isn’t just about the end product, it’s about creating moments and memories with our loved ones.
